GCA Live | Demo 1 | Demo 2

Here you will find information on the various Crimson Avengers recordings that have been produced throughout the ages. Hopefully, in the near future there will also be MP3's from our old demos and the more recent live album. Speaking of which:

Garton's Crimson Avengers
Live at Chalmer's United Church, Gould

The most recent and thorough recording of the Crimson Avengers is a live album that we made in August 2002. The album was compiled from a series of concerts performed at the Scottish festival in Gould and features 55 minutes of music from these shows. The CD also contains both of the old demos in MP3 format, which can be listened to on your computer, for another 40 minutes worth of content.

The tracks are listed below, some of which you can download as MP3 files for your enjoyment.

The Early Years
Demos from 2000-2001

Dave'n'Joanne

The Avengers recorded two demos, both of which are included in MP3 format on our live CD. However, in the interest of propagating our influence as far as possible, these demos are/will be available here (as soon as I get my act together and post them online).

The first demo, recorded very, very late at night during November 2000, was made shortly after the band was formed. It's a little rough in spots (many spots), but it also has some of our favorite tunes and compositions on it.

The second demo, recorded in February 2001, shows a more polished, professional band. These tracks were recorded as a contradance demo, so they all start off with what are referred to in the industry as "potatos". If you need convincing, start with these tunes, the quality is a good deal higher than that of the first demo.

First Demo

1. The Saturday Morning Set
Lexy Macaskill's (Dr. John Macaskill)/The Scholar/The Salmon Beds (Frank Cassidy)/All She Wore Was a Big Brown Hat (David Clark)

A variety-filled set that features pretty much every instrument in the Crimson Avenger repertoire: fiddles, flute, guitar, bouzouki, piano and banjo. The last tune was penned by our own Dave, and we love him for it.

2. The High High Hill

This song is one that I learned from one of my favorite singers, Kirk MacGeachy or Orealis. While many versions of this song exist, Joanne and I are in agreement that Scottish songs tend to be the best, so that's the one we did.

3. The Hat Trick
Joanne's Jig (David Clark)/Artiches Migdasov (Joanne Garton)/The Road to Skye

The original Crimson Avengers set. Two jigs from our own lovely and talented fiddle players, followed by a Scottish jig that could only be described as "epic".

4. Prends une chance
La gigue de la marraine Alfreda

A creative interpretation of a French-Canadian reel from the repertoire of Louis "Pitou" Boudreault. Fun for the whole family, unless you hate the Swedes. In which case it's not fun.

Look over there (where?)

Second Demo

1. Laughing Yak (The Solas Set)
John Stenson's #2/MacArthur's Road/Return to Miltown/Branohm (Maire Breathnach)

Finally, a set of reels that you can bucksaw to with confidence. This one comes with only one fiddle, but an extra large helping of banjo to compensate.

2. Two Rivers
Leona Tuttle (Larry Ungar)/Two Rivers (Larry Ungar)

A pair of waltzes written by Larry Ungar, a prolific writer from the United States. They're purty.

3. The Hermit Gerbil Stomp
The Hermit Crab (Steve Jones)/The Barnyard Stomp (Nicholas Williams)/Whirling Gerbils (Nicholas Williams)

Steve Jones writes some beautiful tunes, and the Hermit Crab Jig (from his Phenigma days) is no exception. This tune segues into a pair of reels written by Nick specifically for contra dancing.

It's a me!
